ROAR HYBRID
FREE PLACES FOR BIPOC APPLICANTS
APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED.
For the ROAR HYBRID Program, ROAR offers 2 free spots for participants who self identify as black, indigenous and people of color and/or people with refugee status. We stand in solidarity with the current uprising that calls for an end to globalized racism. Sparked by the events of police brutality in the so called United States, mass protests call attention to the nature of racism against black and brown people of color worldwide. Germany, where ROAR is located, has its own history of white nationalism, genocide, and ongoing xenophobia. Further, our field of contemporary dance has had a very particular way of appropriating forms, erasing histories, and exalting white body supremacy. We see this in classes, on stages, and in institutional leadership. We see this reflected in our own leadership and in who feels drawn to participate in ROAR.
Every teacher in ROAR has invested time and attention to “undoing” our patterns, expanding our perceptions, and challenging norms of our practices in order to evolve into more liberated artists. While this moment calls on us to direct our efforts specifically towards the embodied racism and imperialism we carry, it looks quite different for each of us based on context and lived experience in places outside of the US and Germany. Collectively, we are dedicated to the work it will take to run a more just and inclusive program.
Free places for BIPOC is not a scholarship or diversity placement. It is one step towards acknowledging what has been taken away, stolen, or extracted from BIPOC through the legacy of slavery, colonization, and global capitalism that we, as white artists, have directly or indirectly benefitted from. We acknowledge that the work of undoing will never be done but can contribute to a more liberated future for all.

ROAR invites international participants from different fields who are motivated to commit to an immersive period of study, reflection, physical practice, collective exchange and exposure to a wide variety of performance-making tools and approaches. All teachers come from a multidisciplinary background, with a firm background in contemporary dance and somatic movement exploration.
This year’s program is limited to 15 participants.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW:
Previous dance education: to apply you do not need a previous formal dance education.
Spoken language: all activities are held in English. It is important that you are comfortable articulating your stream of thoughts in English in order to participate fully. This is even more important for online classes.
Inclusivity: ROAR Berlin believes that everyone benefits from a diverse and inclusive creative environment. Cohorts have included participants of all genders, sexual orientations, and a variety of racial, economic and cultural backgrounds.
Participants will be asked to share their preferred gender pronoun, even if they are not accustomed to doing so. We will work to accommodate differing abilities but request you let us know well in advance. Unfortunately, there will not be Sign Language interpreters for these workshops.
Understanding that participation requires taking risks and being vulnerable, we aim to create the best space to grow and learn together but acknowledge that we may fail even in our best efforts. We urge participants to let one of the mentors know if they feel something is being overlooked.Applying for a FREE Place must be done in advance. In reviewing applications we are not making any assumptions about applicants identities. We cannot grant a free place after invitations have been made or the program has started.
